Shade trees, ornamental trees, screens and hedges planted at the right depth, staked, mulched and watered in.
A tree planted well will outlive the person who planted it. Planting depth, hole width, root handling and watering decide whether a tree thrives or struggles for years. Getting it right the first time is much easier than fixing it later.
We plant shade trees, ornamental trees, evergreen screens, hedges and specimen shrubs. We choose species for the site, dig wide, shallow holes, set the root flare at grade, stake only when needed and mulch properly. We also advise on placement so trees do not outgrow their spot.
Consider mature height and spread, root habit, sun and soil. Oaks and maples give shade, redbuds and dogwoods bloom in spring, and evergreens screen year-round. We keep trees away from power lines, foundations and septic fields.
The hole should be two to three times as wide as the root ball and no deeper. The root flare should be visible at grade. Burlap, wire and ropes are removed or loosened as appropriate, and soil is backfilled gently without heavy compaction.
Trees need deep watering weekly through the first couple of years. Mulch holds moisture, and we show you how to apply it without piling it against the trunk.
Young trees are vulnerable to mowers, string trimmers and deer rubbing. A mulch ring keeps equipment away, a trunk guard protects thin bark and a small fence may be needed in deer country. We suggest simple protection for each tree.

Smaller trees often establish faster than large ones. We discuss size, cost and impact with you.
Large trees should be at least fifteen to twenty feet away, depending on mature size.
Only if it cannot stand on its own or if wind or traffic is a problem, and stakes should come off after a year.
Fall is ideal, followed by early spring. Summer planting needs extra watering.
Small ones can often be moved in the dormant season. Larger trees need specialized equipment.
