Seating Walls

Low, comfortable walls that edge a patio, wrap a fire pit and give the yard seats without extra furniture.

A seating wall does three jobs at once. It defines the edge of a patio, it holds back a bit of grade or a planting bed and it gives people somewhere to sit. At the right height and depth it is as comfortable as a bench and far more permanent.

We build seating walls in natural stone, stone veneer, segmental block and brick, capped with a smooth stone or precast cap that is pleasant to sit on. Curved walls around fire pits are a favorite, and wide caps double as a place to set a drink or a plate.

Height and depth

Comfortable seating height is about eighteen inches, and a cap depth of eighteen to twenty-four inches gives enough room to sit or lean. We set these dimensions with you so the wall suits the people who will use it.

Caps and edges

A good cap is smooth, slightly overhanging and well attached. We use natural stone, thick precast or concrete caps with softened edges. Light colors stay cooler in the sun, and dark colors look dramatic at night.

Built to last

Seating walls need a buried footing, a solid core and proper backfill like any structure. We build them with the same care as retaining walls, because people lean and sit on them hard.

Lighting and comfort

A thoughtful seating wall includes low lighting under the cap, a comfortable overhang and a surface that is not too hot or cold. We can add cushions, planter ends and built-in power for heaters. These small details make the difference between a wall and a place.

Questions

Seating Walls FAQ

How high should a seating wall be?

About eighteen inches is comfortable for most adults, and you can go a little lower or higher depending on who uses it.

Can a seating wall hold soil?

Yes. Many double as short retaining walls. We build them with drainage so soil pressure does not push them.

Are seating walls cheaper than furniture?

Not always, but they are permanent, weatherproof and add structure to the design.

Can I add cushions?

Of course. Many clients keep weatherproof cushions in a deck box for comfort.

Can a seating wall double as a planter?

Yes. A wide wall with a planter end or integrated planting bed looks great and softens the edge.
