Look at past work
Ask to see completed projects, ideally ones a few years old. Photos of fresh work look good, but older work shows how it ages.
Ask about the base
Ask how deep the base will be, what material it is and how it is compacted. A confident answer is a good sign.
Get a written scope
A clear quote lists materials, dimensions, drainage, cleanup and schedule. Vague proposals lead to disputes.
Check insurance and requirements
Ask what insurance coverage the company carries and what registrations your city or county requires of contractors.
Talk to references
Past clients can tell you about communication, tidiness and how problems were handled.
Watch for red flags
Large upfront payments, pressure to sign today, no written scope and bids far below others deserve caution.
Choose the contractor who explains the base, writes the scope clearly and shows older work.
