Safe, comfortable steps in stone, block and pavers, with even risers, generous treads and rails where they matter.
Steps connect the levels of a yard, and they have one job above all: to be safe. Even risers, deep treads and good footing in wet weather matter more than appearance, and good steps manage to be both safe and beautiful.
We build entry steps, garden stairs and long slope staircases in natural stone, precast treads, segmental block and pavers. We set consistent rise and run, plan landings for long flights and install railings or low walls where the drop calls for them.
Comfortable outdoor steps have a rise of about six inches and a tread depth of twelve to fifteen inches, much gentler than indoor stairs. Every step in a flight should be the same, because uneven steps cause trips.
Heavy stone treads rest on a compacted stone base or a concrete footing and are set with a slight slope to shed water. We use textured surfaces for grip and avoid polished stone.
Railings are important on tall flights and near drops. Step lights tucked under treads or in risers make night use safe and give the stairs a glow.
Steps feel natural when they follow the slope, land on level platforms and are wide enough to walk two abreast. Planting along the edges, a handrail where needed and soft lighting make them a feature rather than an obstacle.

Yes. We remove them, rebuild the base and install new treads and risers.
Local code often requires rails above a certain height. We plan them in with the design.
Textured stone grips well. We choose finishes with traction and avoid polished surfaces outdoors.
