Natural Stone Patios

Flagstone, limestone and bluestone patios with the color variation and character that only real stone has.

No two pieces of natural stone are alike, and that is the point. Flagstone, Tennessee limestone and bluestone bring layered color, texture and a sense of age that manufactured products imitate but rarely match. A natural stone patio looks like it grew out of the land.

We hand-fit irregular flagstone, cut and set rectangular dimensional stone and combine stone types for borders and focal points. Stone patios can be set on a compacted base with sand or stone dust joints, or on a mortar-set concrete slab for a tighter, more formal look.

Irregular versus dimensional

Irregular flagstone gives a relaxed, organic look and works well with plantings in the joints. Dimensional stone is cut into squares and rectangles for a cleaner, more formal pattern. Both are laid with care so that edges, levels and joints look intentional.

Dry-laid or mortared

A dry-laid patio on compacted base is more forgiving and easier to repair, and it allows creeping thyme or moss in the joints. A mortared patio on a slab is firmer and cleaner but must be built with proper control joints and drainage to avoid cracking.

Local character

Tennessee limestone and regional fieldstone fit Middle Tennessee homes naturally. We source stone from regional suppliers when we can and show you actual slabs so you see the color range before it goes down.

Seeing the stone first

Natural stone varies from slab to slab and from pallet to pallet. We encourage a visit to the supplier or a look at several sample slabs so you know the true range of color and texture. Knowing what to expect avoids surprises and lets you choose a favorite.

Questions

Natural Stone Patios FAQ

What is the difference between flagstone and limestone?

Flagstone is a general term for flat sedimentary stone split into slabs. Limestone is a specific stone with a distinct color and texture. Both are used for patios and the look is quite different.

Is natural stone more expensive than pavers?

Often yes, because stone and labor are both more involved. The look and character are the reasons clients choose it.

Does flagstone get too hot to walk on?

Light colors stay cooler. Dark stone can warm up in direct summer sun, so color matters in an open, sunny yard.

Should natural stone be sealed?

It depends on the stone and the look you want. Sealing can deepen color and resist stains. We explain the choice for your specific stone.

Can flagstone be set in the lawn?

Yes. Stepping stones set in turf make informal paths, and we set them on a compacted base so they stay level.
