Erosion Control

Matting, check dams, native plantings and stone armoring that hold soil in place on banks, swales and bare ground.

Soil that leaves the yard in the rain is gone for good. Eroding banks, washed-out swales and bare slopes lose topsoil, silt up drains and eventually undermine walls and patios. Stabilizing them early is far cheaper than repairing the damage.

We stabilize erosion with a combination of tools: regrading to gentler slopes, erosion control matting, check dams and stone armoring in channels, deep-rooted native plantings and retaining walls where the slope is too steep for plants alone.

Why soil moves

Fast water on bare or steep soil lifts and carries particles. Roof runoff concentrated at a single point, downspouts that end on a slope and bare patches under shade trees are common causes.

Stabilizing methods

Matting protects seed and young plants until they root. Stone in channels slows flow and spreads it. Native grasses and shrubs with deep roots hold soil for years. Together they give both immediate and lasting protection.

Fixing the cause

We find where water is concentrating and spread it out, extend downspouts and add swales, so the stabilization does not fail the next storm. Without fixing the water, repairs wash out.

Maintaining stabilized slopes

Newly stabilized slopes need water and protection until plants root. Keep traffic off, repair rills early and replace seed or plants that fail. We provide a follow-up plan for the first season.

Questions

Erosion Control FAQ

Can erosion be fixed with plants alone?

On gentle slopes yes. Steep or fast-moving areas need matting, stone or walls to hold soil while plants establish.

What causes gullies in a yard?

Concentrated runoff, typically from downspouts or low spots, cutting into bare soil.

How fast does erosion control work?

Matting and stone work immediately, and plants strengthen the fix over a season or two.

Can you stabilize a creek bank?

Small residential banks, yes. Larger streams may need engineering and permits.

Can erosion control be done in winter?

Matting and stone can go in any time. Seeding needs the right season, and we time it accordingly.
