Rugged boulders and stacked natural stone for walls that look like part of the hillside and stand for generations.
Natural stone walls have been part of Tennessee landscapes for two centuries, from farm field walls to estate terraces. They look right because the material belongs here, and a well-built one can stand for generations with little care.
We build dry-stack walls, mortared stone walls and boulder retaining walls, choosing stone for color, shape and size and setting each piece by hand or with machinery. Boulder walls are placed with an excavator and finished with plantings tucked between the rocks.
Dry-stack walls rely on careful fitting and weight and allow water through. Mortared walls look tighter and more formal and need a solid footing. Boulder walls use large pieces for a rugged look and often act as structural retaining walls.
Large stones are set low and back into the slope, with smaller stones above, offset joints and tight fits. A wall that looks casual is usually the result of a lot of careful planning.
Gaps between boulders and dry-stack stones are ideal for creeping thyme, sedum, ferns and native grasses. Planted walls look established within a season and help hold soil.
Stone is heavy, so local sources save cost and fit the region. We work with regional quarries and stone yards and show you real stone before it is delivered. Color, size and shape all matter, and a visit to the yard is often the best part of the project.

Properly built, generations. The stone does not wear out, and the structure depends on base, drainage and careful placement.
Yes, with the right size, burial depth and drainage. Taller structural boulder walls may need engineering.
Dry-stack walls drain naturally through the joints, and structural ones still need a gravel zone and base.
Often we can find similar stone or build a transition so the new work reads as part of the same landscape.
Yes. Large flat boulders make natural steps and landings on a slope, set so they are stable and level.
