Planting Beds and Borders

Layered beds of shrubs, perennials and grasses with crisp edges that give color and structure all year.

Planting beds are where a landscape gets its softness. Layers of height, texture and color frame the house, soften walls and fences and give the eye somewhere to rest. A good bed looks full in every season and needs less work than a bad one.

We design and plant beds with evergreen structure, flowering shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses and bulbs, arranged by height and bloom time. We edge them crisply, improve the soil and finish with mulch so they look sharp and hold moisture.

Layers and seasons

Tall plants go at the back or center, mid-height plants fill in and low groundcovers edge the front. Evergreens give winter structure, and perennials and bulbs supply seasonal color. We plan bloom times so there is always something happening.

Shape and edge

Bed lines should flow with the house and the lawn. We cut a deep, clean edge or install steel, stone or brick edging, which keeps mulch and turf apart and makes maintenance easy.

Soil and mulch

We loosen clay, mix in compost and plant slightly high where drainage is slow. Two to three inches of mulch, kept off the stems, reduces weeds and keeps roots cool.

Maintaining a bed

A bed needs light, regular care: watering, a refresh of mulch, trimming at the right times and removal of weeds while they are small. Good design and soil prep reduce the work considerably, and we provide a simple seasonal checklist.

Questions

Planting Beds FAQ

What plants work well in Middle Tennessee beds?

Hydrangeas, boxwood, hollies, coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, ornamental grasses and native perennials are popular and hardy.

How do I keep deer out of beds?

Plant choices help, since deer avoid many aromatic and fuzzy plants. Fencing or repellents may be needed in high-pressure areas.

Can you redo my existing beds?

Yes. We remove failing plants, rework the soil and replant to a design you like.

How much mulch should I use?

Two to three inches, kept a few inches from stems and trunks.

Can beds be low maintenance?

Yes. Tough, well-spaced plants, drip irrigation and mulch keep upkeep modest.
